What Doesn’t Kill You is an exhibition of recent artworks by Singapore-based artists
Hélène Le Chatelier and Sunaina Bhalla. The exhibition celebrates the strength and
resilience of women artists who have navigated a fine balance between their personal
and professional challenges. Sunaina’s practice is a bold and playful experimentation
in materials and textures, drawing in part from the challenges she has overcome as a
breast cancer survivor. Hélène’s works hint at the tensions of trauma in unspoken
encounters through complex layers of text, image and sound. The female body –
simultaneously fragile and indestructible, beautiful in its natural imperfections and
the delicate tracing of scars from healed ruptures – is a central motif.
Curated by Dr Michelle Lim in conjunction with International Women’s Day 2025,
What Doesn’t Kill You includes embroidered drawings, photo-based works, sound and
site-specific installations. Together in conversation for the first time, Hélène and
Sunaina’s works show how what doesn’t kill you will not only make you stronger, it can
be a rich resource and generous inspiration for creating beauty in art.
